An Employer Identification Number is issued by the Internal Revenue Service. The EIN serves as an identifier the IRS uses to track federal tax payments made by your business, similar to the way a Social Security Number is used to track individual tax payments.

Do I Need an EIN For My Wyoming Corporation?

Not every business needs an EIN (also known as a Federal Employer Identification Number, or FEIN). The IRS offers the following questions to help businesses determine if they need an EIN or not.

  • Are you involved in:
  • Trusts, except certain grantor-owned revocable trusts, IRAs, Exempt Organization Business Income Tax Returns
  • Estates
  • Real estate mortgage investment conduits
  • Non-profit organizations
  • Farmers’ cooperatives
  • Plan administrators

You will also need an EIN if you intend to open a business account for your company, whether or not the account is ever used. Banks require you to supply an EIN to create an account.

How Do I Apply For an EIN For My Wyoming Corporation?

You apply for an EIN online at the IRS website. It is free to apply. Once you begin the application, you must complete it in a single sitting. You cannot log out and start again where you left off.

After You Apply for an EIN

Once you have applied for an EIN and been approved, you will automatically be enrolled in the Electronic Federal Tax Payment System (EFTPS). You will receive by mail an enrollment confirmation, a Personal Identification Number (PIN), and complete instructions for using the EFTPS.

There is no fee to utilize the EFTPS. All tax payments can be made through the internet or by phone, and payments can be made 24 hours a day, seven days a week.
